The Importance of Cat Vet Visits: Why Your Cat Needs Regular Exams

Your Cat Looks Fine. That Is Exactly the Problem. 

Cats are experts at looking well. It is instinct, not stubbornness. In the wild, an animal that shows weakness becomes a target, and your cat still carries that wiring even when the biggest threat in the house is the vacuum cleaner. 

The result is that most cats do not act sick until a condition is already advanced. A cat can lose a meaningful amount of kidney function, develop painful dental disease, or begin an early thyroid problem while still greeting you at the door and purring on the couch. 

That is the whole case for a wellness exam. It is not about treating a problem you already noticed. It is about finding the ones your cat is very good at hiding. 

How Often Should Cats Go to the Vet? 

The general schedule our veterinarians recommend: 

• Kittens (under 1 year): every 3 to 4 weeks until roughly 16 weeks of age for the vaccine and deworming series, then a spay or neuter conversation 
• Adult cats (1 to 7 years): once a year for a full wellness exam, vaccines, and parasite screening 
• Senior cats (7 years and older): twice a year, with baseline bloodwork and urine testing 
• Cats with a diagnosed condition: as directed, often every 3 to 6 months 

One human year is roughly four to five years of aging for an adult cat. A single skipped visit is not a skipped year. It is closer to skipping half a decade of checkups.

What About Indoor Only Cats? 

Indoor cats still need yearly visits. Living inside lowers the risk of trauma, fights, and some infectious disease, but it does nothing to prevent the conditions that actually shorten feline lives: 

• Dental disease, which is common and painful long before a cat stops eating 
• Chronic kidney disease 
• Hyperthyroidism 
• Diabetes and obesity 
• Heart disease, which is often silent until a crisis 
• Fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites carried in on shoes, dogs, and screened porches 

Around Social Circle, Conyers, Covington, and the surrounding areas, plenty of "indoor" cats also spend time on a porch or slip out the back door. Prevention is far cheaper than the emergency visit that follows.

What Happens During a Cat Wellness Exam 

A wellness exam at any of our hospitals is a nose to tail evaluation, not a quick glance. Your veterinarian will: 

• Weigh your cat and compare the trend against past visits, since gradual weight loss is one of the earliest warning signs 
• Check the mouth for tartar, gum inflammation, and resorptive lesions, then discuss dental care if needed 
• Listen to the heart and lungs for murmurs, rhythm changes, and abnormal sounds 
• Feel the abdomen to assess kidney size, thyroid, bladder, and intestines 
• Examine eyes, ears, skin, and coat 
• Review vaccines based on age and lifestyle rather than a one size fits all schedule 
• Recommend parasite prevention and annual fecal testing 
• Discuss litter box habits, appetite, water intake, grooming, and behavior changes 

For senior cats, your veterinarian will usually add bloodwork and a urine sample. These simple tests catch kidney and thyroid changes years before outward symptoms appear, which is when treatment works best.

Warning Signs That Should Not Wait for the next Visit 

Call us if you notice any of the following: 

• Straining in the litter box or producing very little urine, which is an emergency in male cats 
• Urinating outside the box, or more often than usual 
• Drinking noticeably more water 
• Weight loss, even with a normal appetite 
• Vomiting more than once or twice a month 
• Hiding, sleeping more, or a drop in grooming 
• Bad breath, drooling, or dropping food while eating 
• Difficulty jumping onto surfaces they used to reach easily 

A cat that stops eating for more than 24 hours needs to be seen promptly. Feline liver complications can develop quickly when a cat goes without food.

Making the Visit Easier on Everyone 

For many families, the hardest part is not the exam. It is the carrier. 

• Leave the carrier out year-round with a soft towel inside so it stops being a warning sign 
• Feed treats or meals near it and eventually inside it 
• Use a carrier that opens from the top and unlatches into two halves, so your cat can stay nestled during part of the exam 
• Spray bedding with a feline pheromone product about 15 minutes before you leave 
• Cover the carrier with a light towel in the car and in the lobby 
• Bring a favorite treat and a familiar blanket
