Essential Dental Care for Your Pets

Dental disease affects 70-85% of dogs and cats over the age of two, making proper dental care essential for your pet's overall health. Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common issues veterinarians encounter. When plaque and tartar accumulate on your pet's teeth, it can lead to serious health problems, including heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Regular dental exams and cleanings are crucial in maintaining good oral hygiene, preventing future complications, and reducing the risk of tooth loss and chronic pain. Additionally, there’s evidence that maintaining your pet’s dental health can contribute to a longer, healthier life.

Signs of poor oral health

If you notice any of the below signs, your pet may need a dental cleaning:

  • Bad breath
  • Sensitive around the mouth area
  • Loose, discolored or tartar-covered teeth
  • Drooling or dropping food from the mouth
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Difficulty eating and chewing food
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding from the mouth area

Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings require your pet to be under anesthesia. Before being put under anesthesia, we require a blood test to be performed that may uncover some underlying issues.

Keep your Pet’s Teeth Clean

There are steps you can take at home to help reduce the severity of dental disease.

  • Brush your pet’s teeth daily (it is important to use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets)
  • Use dental chews or an oral rinse
  • Diet change to a dental diet

At All Care Veterinary Network, we offer complete pet oral health services, including:

  • Exams
  • State-of-the-art ultrasonic teeth cleaner
  • Tooth polishing (discourages plaque and tartar build-up)
