Who’s the Top Dog?

Who’s the Top Dog?

Find out which breeds make the best soccer players.

With soccer fans across Georgia already cheering on their favorite teams, we started wondering: what if dogs took the field?

Sure, most pups would be more interested in chasing a miniature sized soccer ball than passing it, but every breed brings its own unique strengths to the game. From speedy Greyhounds and strategic Border Collies to determined Bulldogs and fetch-loving Golden Retrievers.

Top Players

The Golden Retriever: Most Likely to Retrieve the Ball

Every soccer team needs someone who can get the ball back quickly.

Golden Retrievers would take this responsibility very seriously. In fact, they might be a little too enthusiastic. The moment the ball leaves the field, a Golden would proudly scoop it up and deliver it directly to the nearest human, whether the game was still happening or not.

Strengths: excellent ball recovery, endless enthusiasm, great team spirit

Challenges: may not understand the concept of "give the ball back"

The Border Collie: Team Captain

If any breed could learn soccer strategy, it would be the Border Collie.

Highly intelligent and incredibly athletic, Border Collies would organize the entire team before kickoff. They would memorize every play, anticipate every pass, and probably coach the referee while they're at it.

Strengths: tactical genius, incredible stamina, natural leader

Challenge: gets frustrated when teammates are not paying attention

The Greyhound: Fastest Player on the Field

Need a breakaway goal? Call the Greyhound.

Built for speed, Greyhounds could sprint from one end of the field to the other in seconds. Of course, after a few impressive runs, they would likely decide it was time for a nap.

Strengths: blazing speed, excellent acceleration,

Challenges: may require a halftime snooze

The Beagle: Distracted by the Smell of Victory

Or a squirrel.
Or a hot dog.
Or literally anything else.

Beagles would start every game focused and determined before catching an interesting scent drifting in from the stands.

Strengths: excellent sense of smell, high energy

Challenges: easily recruited by concession vendors

The Bulldog: Defensive Specialist

Bulldogs aren't interested in running laps around the field.

They're interested in parking themselves exactly where they need to be and refusing to move.

Their defensive strategy would be simple but surprisingly effective.

Strengths: strong and determined, impossible to push around

Challenges: considers jogging optional

The Jack Russell Terrier: Unlimited Energy

Every team needs an energizer bunny.

Jack Russells would spend the entire match sprinting, jumping, barking, and somehow appearing everywhere at once. Coaches would love their effort, even if nobody could predict what they were going to do next.

Strengths: endless energy, fearless attitude

Challenges: has never heard the phrase "slow down"

The Great Dane: Goalkeeper Extraordinaire

Standing between the posts, the Great Dane would have a distinct advantage.

With long legs and an impressive reach, they could block a surprising number of shots. Opposing teams might wonder if using a horse as a goalkeeper is technically legal.

Strengths: huge reach, intimidating presence

Challenges: occasionally forgets how large they are

Dogs: The True MVPs

While some breeds might have an advantage on the soccer field, every dog brings something even more valuable to the team. Regardless of breed, size, or skill level, dogs are natural MVPs because of the qualities that matter most: loyalty, companionship, resilience, and unconditional love.

They celebrate life's victories with us, stick by our side through challenges, and somehow make even ordinary days better. Whether they're chasing a soccer ball, taking a nap, or joining us on an adventure, dogs have a special way of bringing joy wherever they go.

In the end, the true champion isn't the fastest breed or the best goal scorer. It's every dog that fills our lives with happiness, one tail wag at a time.
